The photographer's capture of the focal point is vital to the piece's subject matter, a clear reflection of a sense of oncoming or already found death. I enjoy how the focus has been pulled form the foreground to the cross; this gives the viewer a sense as though they are watching from the ground themselves; perhaps in the characteristic of another passed away or an insect. This personal feel to the piece really reinforces an understanding with the subject, making us question how we view death.
The use of black and white does reflect this feeling powerfully, as the shading is ominous and gives a sense of darkness. The use of rigid and construction lines of the cross juxtaposition to the organic and messy shapes of the environment really reflects its disposition and a true sense of loss.
